Caring for Your Braces at Home
Goo oral hygiene during orthodontic treatment is essential for a healthy, lasting smile.
Brush your teeth at least twice a day to remove bacteria and plaque that can build up around brackets and wires. Use a fluoride toothpaste—especially since Missoula’s public water does not contain fluoride.
Using an electric toothbrush can make brushing easier and more effective. You should also floss daily or use a water flosser to keep the spaces between your teeth healthy.
Continue seeing your general dentist for regular cleanings and checkups throughout treatment. When your braces come off, we want your smile to not only be straight—but healthy and long-lasting.
Dealing with Discomfort
As your teeth begin to move, they may be sore. This usually improves within a few days as your mouth adjusts.
You may also notice irritation from brackets or wires. Orthodontic wax (provided in your start kit) can be placed over any area to provide relief.
If a bracket comes loose, in most cases, it can wait until your next visit, but contact us so we can determine if you should be seen sooner. If possible, make note of the location and number of brackets off.
